Friday night, the Bruins had their highest draft pick in years. I honestly can’t even remember where I was when the draft lottery happened, but I do remember seeing that they landed the seventh pick and I just started laughing out loud. The regular season was borderline comical, aside from a few bright spots. And let’s be real, the Bruins have had a terrible track record when it comes to drafting. Don’t even get me started on the 2015 draft. I still look back at that one when I need a good laugh.
That said, I’d be lying if I told you I dedicated much of my time to learning about the prospects heading into this draft. But even with that, I’m pretty confident I could’ve done a better job than Sweeney has in recent years. I think the 2024 1st rounder had zero goals last season? Great work, buddy.
Anyway, I didn’t expect Hagens to still be on the board at pick seven. Just a few months ago, he was projected to go number one overall. Some people say he had an off year, but I think the level of competition in college is way tougher than juniors right now, just my opinion. So when the Bruins were up, I really thought Sweeney was going to blow it again. But honestly, it was a no-brainer. You had to take Hagens at that spot. And if he doesn’t pan out, I won’t hold it against him. Every team in that position would’ve made the same call.
So now we wait and see what these kids can do in camp. I fully expect Hagens to head back to college for another year of development and that’s the right move. No need to rush him with where the team is at. We’ll be talking a lot more about that here as the season gets closer.
